“Clouds of Chernobyl – The Lost Year 1986”
Marking the directorial debut of Ligia Ciornei, this film makes its appearance at the Cannes Film Festival in the Marché du Film section.
Synopsis: The effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster quickly reverberated throughout Europe. In Romania, the desperate measures enacted by the communist regime had a profound impact on many inhabitants of the north; due to radiation, women were forced to abort using improvised methods (under indirect pressure from the party).
Irina, a school teacher living in a rural village, a mother of two children, and wife of a ship’s captain, finds herself under familial pressure and is confronted with a terrible decision. Will she choose to give up, or will she face whatever consequences life throws at her?
A few years later, as the communist regime in Romania collapses, the feeling of freedom is ambiguous, and Irina’s decision is harshly criticized by her children. What is freedom? This becomes a question we all face, and a response we continue to strive for. Freedom remains the only option!
The film stars Isabela Neamțu as Irina, with Gavril Pătru, Victoria Cociaș, and Valer Dellakeza in primary roles. Other roles are performed by Oana Pușcatu, Anastasia Teodora Simion, Radu Badea, and Sabin Simion.
